COMMONLY ASKED DRAMA CAMP QUESTIONS

QUESTION:  Is there an extra charge for field trips and how do you get to and from the field trip locations?

Transportation is by City Bus or the North County Sprinter. However, in VISTA we are in such a centralized location we walk because the VISTA ADOBE, VISTA ENTERTAINMENT CENTER, and KRIKORIAN THEATER are a mile or less.  The San Marcos camps will always take the sprinter to Vista for field trips.  We pay for all transportation and field trips.

QUESTION:  How many students are allowed in your camp?

We take up to 40.  Average camp sizes the past 4 years have been 35 to 40.

QUESTION:  Do you carry your own insurance?

Yes, we carry our own insurance.

QUESTION:  Does every child get a speaking line in the show you perform?

Yes.  We audition the kids on the first day and the roles and scripts are assigned after lunch.  Every child receives a line OR a solo in the show.

QUESTION:  Do we have to provide the costume?

No.  We provide all the costumes.  You DO need to provide footwear, socks and or tights.  If the show is set in a 'current' time period, the child will provide their own pair of levis, white shirt, etc.

QUESTION:  My child can’t, (or won’t), eat certain things.  Do you provide a weekly breakdown of the snacks you will be serving just in case my child can’t, (or won’t), eat that item?

Yes.  The first day of class the parents will receive a two week  breakdown of daily activities and a two week breakdown of ALL snacks we are serving so you can provide something else for your child on the off chance they can’t, (or won’t), eat something we provide.  PLEASE NOTE:  The Daily Breakdown and Snack list should NOT be considered a daily bible.  Theater is a very grey area.  Sometimes we don’t get a scheduled activity completed and we have to postpone an activity for another day.  The same thing goes for snacks.  If choreography or something else runs long we may not get to the snack we listed on the chart.  We may have to do a 'quicker' snack to keep things on schedule.  But the kids will ALWAYS get snack.

QUESTION:  The FULL DAY CAMP sounds so busy. . .Is there any downtime?

It’s true, the day is full of activities:  Dancing, singing, guest speakers, blocking the show, crafts, etc.  However, we do have down time when the kids relax and nap if they want to.  We designate a 40 minutes every after noon for this 'quiet time'.  This is why we ask the kids to bring a blanket and pillow they can leave at the theater.  Who doesn't love a good nap?!

QUESTION:  Are ALL the shows Directed by Randall Hickman?

No.  We are now into our 8th year and we have some amazing young talent coming up who have been with us since they were 7 and 8 years of age.  They are ALL planning on theater careers whether it be on stage, behind the scenes or teaching in a classroom situation.  We won’t abandon them now that they’re too old to participate in our youth shows.  Doug and I want to give them experience they can use as they further their careers.

During our 2008 summer camps I watched my two assistant Director's take a show and create magic with the kids. . . I will continue to do this in the future.  However, since it caused a bit of confusion among parents, I always list WHO is directing what show on the DRAMA CAMP PAGE.

As we move into the future I am looking at the youngsters who are leaving my program and moving into adulthood.  Doug and I consider it our jobs as teachers and mentors to give them a springboard to help them into the next phase of their lives.  Hopefully, when their students become old enough they will supply them with the same opportunity’s I am providing for them.  It’s the theater ‘circle of life’.

As additional questions come up, we will post them on this page.
